The Prenatal Development of the Knee Joint in Korean Fetuses

Abstract
In an attempt to study the prenatal development of the knee joint, histological observation was carried out With Korean fetuses of 9 mm to 360 mm crown-rump measurement with the following results.
1. The primordium of the femur, the tibia, and the knee joint could be recognized to appear as blastemal tissue from the, 12 mm embryo and to complete the chondrification at the 20 mm in length. The patella, formed in the 30 mm length of fetus as the cellular differentiation of the quadriceps femoris tendon, was observed to finish the chondrification at the 53 mm fetus.
2. The knee joint was noted to assume the form of normal joint¢¥ surface from the 20 mm embryo and its intermediate layer proceeded developing as the vascular mesenchymal cells which was closely incorporated with the periarticular chondrogenic layer. The appearance of the premordium of the cruciate ligament and the meniscus was conspicuous as the vascular mesenchymal cells, preceding that of the joint space.
3. Recognition of the femoro-patellar joint and both medial and lateral femoromeniscal joints was possible in the 35 mm length, while that of the tibiomeniscal joint and the primary joint cavities of all these joints was observed for the first time at the 52 mm embryo.
4. As to the appearance of the bursa it was noted that the pretibial bursa was present at the 40 mm length, the bursa anserina and semimembranosus at the 52 mm length. And at this stage the synovial villi could already be discernible at the suprapatellar and popliteal fossa.
5. The patellar ligament, the medial and lateral, collateral ligaments appeared at the 30 mm length. Its appearance, begun as the condensation of young round cell, proceeded growth, eventually being replaced by fibrous tissue with the increase of fetal age.
6. The fabella, located at the origin of the lateral gastrocnemius tendon, appeared at the 1.70 mm embryo as the condensation of the precartilagenous cells at first.
